Exploring the Best Family Parks In Memphis

Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park

Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park is not actually within the city of Memphis but it is in Shelby County and just a short drive from the city.  This park boasts over 12,000 acres of land that are perfect for a family day trip or an overnight stay in one the park cabins or campsights. Camping can be a low-cost, low-stress vacation option! There is no better place to play than the grand outdoors and this state park has many opportunities for you to have fun with your family!

Biking

Bring your bike and ride the 5 mile trail. The trail is well marked making it great for kids. There are no bike rentals in the park.

Bird Watching

According to the park website, the Audubon Society designated this park as an Important Bird Area so if you like to bird watch, bring your binoculars with you. This would be a fun learning experience for kids.

Paddling and Boating

At Poplar Tree Lake, you can rent paddle boats or canoes. This area of the park is peaceful, allowing your family to relax and unwind. You could also bring your own canoe, kayak, or boat. There is easy access to the water from the dock.

Hiking

There are more than 20 miles of trails in the park. My family and I have hiked a couple of the easy trails that are great for families with younger kids. One trail was partly paved which may be handicapped accessible. Check with the park office before planning a trip though. You can also stop in the park office for a map of the different trails and talk to a ranger about the best trail for your family. Park Rangers are a valuable resource when planning any trip to your state park!

Fishing

Bring your fishing pole and fish from the two lakes within the park. You can fish right off the bank or from your boat. If you catch your lunch you can grill the fish at one of the grills located near park benches. While you are preparing a meal the kids can play at the playground located right alongside Poplar Tree Lake!

Horseback Riding

If you happen to own your own horse, the trails at Meeman-Shelby Forest are a beautiful place to ride.
