Exploring the Best Family Parks In Memphis

Overton Park

In the heart of Memphis is Overton Park. This is not just a park, but it also encompasses the Memphis Zoo and the Brooks Museum. My family and I love spending time at the Zoo, playing on the playground, or walking the trail. Overton Park also has a dog park for your favorite furry pet! There is a large open field called the Greensward that is perfect for picnicking or flying a kite.

Biking:

If bike riding is what makes you happy, you can bring your own bike to ride through the park or there are rentals available. The park is is connected to the Greenline, providing easy access to anyone biking through the city. There is a two mile trail through the Old Forest that you can bike through with the whole family.

Take a hike:

Hike through the Old Forest State Natural Area. In hot Tenessee summer's the trail provides a much cooler place to walk and explore nature, thanks to the thick canopy of trees. There is a paved trail and dirt trail through the Old Forest. There is also a nice path around Rainbow Lake. Walking or running are great exercise activities. When you take the kids for a walk, make it a little more interesting with a scavenger hunt! Create you own list of nature items or look online for ideas such as this one.

Picnic:

The greensward is a large field right in Overton Park that is perfect for a family picnic. No need to spend much money-just pack a few sandwiches, snacks, and drinks to enjoy while the kids play! It's a perfect spot for flying a kite, playing soccer, or throwing a frisbee. You can also enjoy an evening picnic while watching a free concert during the summer at the Levitt Shell!
